Apparently the wild flames that are Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy can not be put out! According to Random House:To say it is unusual for a posthumous work in translation to reach number one on the New York Times bestseller list is an understatement. To see a posthumous work in translation reach number one around the world is unprecedented. And yet, that is precisely what has happened with Stieg Larsson, whose three books in the Millennium series – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest – have all become # 1 international bestsellers.
To date, and in four years, roughly 40 million copies of the books have been sold, 4.5 million of those are in the U.S. alone—and this data was collected before The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest‘s recent release.
Online, 21,000 bloggers took to their keyboards to discuss Stieg Larsson (a figure ten times as great as 15 months ago), and Google search returns for the acclaimed author grow steadily every month—most recently hitting the 5.1 million mark. Point of reference, when Random House first release The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, that number was 800,000.
What does this mean for the Millennium Films?
Clearly, the world and the U.S. specifically, can’t get enough of Lisbeth Salander! So, what does this mean for the movies? The Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is still in U.S. theaters and has earned well over 6 million. And The Girl Who Played With Fire opens in one month! July 2…check here for theaters and dates (many more to be added in the coming weeks, stay tuned!). The trailer will be up in just a few days as buzz for FIRE builds!
