THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO There’s an English-language remake in the works, but Niels Arden Oplev’s film of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling thriller, a Swedish-Danish co-production, gets the job done. Noomi Rapace plays the brainy, damaged title character, and Michael Nyqvist is a journalist whom she helps search for the missing daughter of a powerful industrialist. “To retrofit ‘Dragon Tattoo’ for the screen, the writers have ditched plot details and characters even as they’ve lifted crucial material from its sequel,” Ms. Dargis wrote in The Times in March. (Music Box, Blu-ray $34.95, standard definition $29.95, not rated)

The late Stieg Larsson’s worldwide bestseller “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is now so popular that it’s going to be made into a Hollywood movie — even though a hit foreign-language film already exists. The Swedish version stars Michael Nyqvist as an investigative journalist looking into a decades-old missing-person case with the help of a brooding, punky computer whiz (played by Noomi Rapace). It’s a grim, foreboding piece of work, but faithful to the novel and effectively gripping. The DVD and Blu-ray include interviews with Rapace and director Niels Arden Oplev.

Why does the US only get the edited, theatrical versions? In Sweden and throughout Europe the full 3 hour television versions can be had on DVD and Blu-Ray. There is also a new boxed set available there with special features. Why can’t we see the extended versions in the US???
I live in Mexico, id like to know if the girl with the dragon tattoo bluray has subtitles in spanish, thanks.
